This Week’s Obsession: Tackling Tax Receipts

Let me tell you something- as soon as I could afford it, I hired an Accountant.

Why, you may ask?

Well to say that math isn’t my strong suit is a tremendous understatement. I was around when the first TI-83 calculator came out (dating myself!) and quickly proceeded to learn how to cheat with it- plugging in as many equations as I could so I could give my brain a break. I later worked for the Math Department while in college and despite being surrounded by brilliance, I still couldn’t find my way out of an equation.

I thought all would be well with the world once I hired an accountant but then I realized the startling fact- I would still have to collect all of the receipts. Sounds like an easy task until I found myself practically climbing into my purses at the end of each month looking for that receipt for the $3 folders.

I was on the brink of giving up when I realized that I needed to treat this task as I would just about any strategy I’d like to implement- it was time to turn it into a habit.

I ran off to the local office supply giant and picked up hanging folders- three total, which would allow for me to organize receipts into three categories- 1) Current Month, 2) Last month which I probably hadn’t turned it yet and 3) really old receipts that I had uncovered. Before long, I was saving receipts like a champ- practically running into my house after a long day of meetings and turning my purse upside down on top of the appropriate folder. And all was well with the world again.

So how do you keep track of all your accounting fun? Feel free to share in the comments below!
